Their first trips remain fresh in their memory, largely because of the brilliant artistic record Thom created along the way for his own pleasure, and to share with a delighted public. The excitement of discovery in an encounter with a new land is simply unrivaled. Spring in the Alps fondly recalls such a maiden voyage. "In 1985," Thom remembers, "Nanette and I first traveled to the Alps, bringing with us naïve expectations that came from The Sound of Music. Astonishingly, we were not disappointed in our romantic hopes; we discovered numerous alpine scenes where Maria and the von Trapp children may well have sung and played." A great peak, perhaps the famed Jungfrau, lends its snow-clad dignity to Spring in the Alps. In contrast, delicate alpine flowers bloom. Trees, standing as silent sentinels, link the timeless and ephemeral. The tranquility is unbroken.
