In wishing to communicate with the viewer, the artist can give us many clues as to his point of view. One of the most direct is the title itself. The artist often directs us to what he finds most interesting or most important about the piece. In Spring Mood the artist is first and foremost trying to communicate a mood, rather than a sense of place. Knowing that the winter is behind us, we feel joy and optimism. We open the closed shutters and windows and let the renewing breezes of Spring refresh us after the long winter. While the bare branches of trees still cast shadows on the streets and buildings, the buds are swelling with anticipation of the change of season. We feel the ever-strengthening rays of the sun warm our face. As with many of Shvaiko's works, the passageways and doors, both open and closed, invite us to explore what lies beyond our immediate view. On the open door to the tavern the sign proclaims "Chez des Amis" -- House of Friends. Come sit and enjoy a glass of wine on the beautiful day! |
