The Drake was initially inspired by an old water mill in the center of Strasbourg, which I visited on my first trip to France in September of 1994. I had wanted to go to France for many years, and I was not disappointed. The beauty and texture of the cities, towns, and countryside exceeded my greatest expectations. I felt like a child, full of wonder. My itinerary included Paris, Dijon, and Strasbourg. Strasbourg lies in the Alsace-Lorraine region, with a rich heritage from both Germany and France. The style of the houses reveals its ancestry. The city has an old section, rich with the kinds of interesting cafes and buildings that I enjoy painting. In this image I strive to bring into harmony architecture and nature. Here is a place where one can rest, feel the spirit of the old city, and admire the beautiful view of the river. The Drake is one of my most favorite paintings. In fact, I have kept it for myself, and have it hanging in my home. |
